Safe Cleaning Products You Can Make at Home

Here are a few recipes you can make with ordinary household items to clean your home.

Carpet Cleaners

For most carpet cleaning purposes, a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle will suffice. If you have a natural-fiber carpet, dilute the vinegar more with 2 cups of water for every cup of vinegar. If you have a grease stain, vinegar may not be enough to get it out. Sprinkle some corn starch onto the affected area and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Vacuum it up and your carpet will be grease-free. For those really tough stains, you will need a more potent formula. Mix equal parts salt, borax, and vinegar. Apply the paste to the stained spots and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming. Borax is a mild skin irritant. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) categorizes borax at the same hazard level as salt and baking soda, so it is perfectly safe to use in home cleaning.

Glass Cleaner

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of white or cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol
  • 1 or 2 drops of orange essential oil (optional for scent)
Mix the ingredients into a spray bottle. Spray onto a cloth or paper towel. Works great on windows and mirrors. Use a crumpled newspaper to remove streaks.

Rust-Away Scrub

  • 1/2 of a lemon
  • 1/2 cup of borax
Rub the lemon in the borax and apply to rust stains on porcelain or enamel sinks and tubs. Rinse off. Do not use any acidic substance (like lemon) on marble or granite, as it will eat into the stone.
