As adults, we appreciate the amount of time it can take to give carpets a good carpet cleaning, and as such, when we visit our friends and family we are always conscious of making sure we don't add to their workload. However, when it comes to children, it's a 'no holds barred' affair.

How to Protect Your Carpets From Common "Kid Stains."

If you have kids yourself, or you host friends and family who brings theirs along then you know exactly what we are talking about. As they run through your house or carry around food, you always feel on edge that, once they leave, you will be scrubbing your carpets for hours. With experiencing providing carpet cleaning services to remove a multitude of kid related stains, Colonial Cleanpro has put together some helpful tips on how to minimize common stains from occurring, and how to quickly remove them if they do.

Mud

The first stain on the list is the all-too-common mud stain. Unlike adults, children have little concern about getting dirty, and often jump in as many puddles are possible. While this is fun outdoors, it is when they excitedly run inside and bring it all with them that the troubles start, often requiring professional carpet cleaning.

Minimize Mud and Dirt Stains

This tip comes in the form of an enjoyable craft activity. Spend a day on the weekend with your children to create and decorate an outdoor shoe rack. We say create and decorate because it will be primarily used by children, so it's important that they like it to encourage its use. If you are not able to build one from scratch, look for an old bookcase at a thrift store that you can repurpose. With your kids, paint it in exciting colors and allow them to add their own personalized decorations. Dedicating a shelf to each child is a great way for them to make it theirs and create a connection with their work.

Removing Mud Stains

Try as you may, there are going to be instances where mud makes its way into your home and onto your carpet. When this happens, here is how to remove it:
  1. Wait for the mud to dry and then vacuum it thoroughly.
  2. Mix a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with around two cups of warm water.
  3. With a clean cloth, blot the stain until it has absorbed the cleaning solution.
  4. Once you have removed the stain, clean the area with clear water and allow it to dry completely.
If you find that the stain is just too heavy, or the area is too large for you to remove yourself, don't despair. Speak with Colonial Cleanpro at 804 324 6471 and let our Ion technology based carpet cleaning system bring your carpet back to life.

Minimize Marker Stains

Do you have a budding Picasso in your home? Or perhaps just a child that enjoys leaving their paper blank and using your carpet as a canvas instead? Either way, you are likely to see a lot of marker stains on your carpet. Instead of discouraging their artistic flair, create a marker-friendly space. If you have an outdoor patio, place a large piece of plastic covering on the floor and tape it to the ground with a bright colored tape. Designate the inside of the colored tape as a creativity area. If you do not have the outdoor space, the same method applies inside, however, place the plastic covering over a tiled area such as your kitchen or even your laundry. While you could just use the plastic over your carpet, if and when marker makes its way outside the designated area, it is much easier to wipe from tiles.

Removing Marker Stains From Carpet

If despite your best efforts, a marker stain has made its way onto your carpet, all is not lost.
  1. Start with a mixture of one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, two cups of warm water and one tablespoon of vinegar.
  2. With a clean cloth, gently blot the area until it has absorbed the cleaning solution.
  3. Swap your wet cloth for a clean and dry one and gently press it against the affected area until you have lifted the stain and solution from your carpet.
  4. Once you have removed the stain, simply clean the area with clear water and allow it to dry completely.

Utilize the Most Effective Carpet Cleaning System in Petersburg

The above method can work great if you can catch the stain quickly. If it has been left to dry, and you find that you can't remove it, it's time to speak with a professional.
