That ugly burnt-orange shag carpeting in your 1977 hella deal house has got to go! You've already removed the Brady Bunch pressed wood wall coverings and the avocado countertops and kitchen appliances. The only major update left to get your humble abode out of the disco era is removing the loud carpet that covers every square inch of floor space. At Colonial Cleanpro in Chesterfield County we can clean that carpet for you, but we also understand why you would want to get rid of it. Here are a few tips on what to do with that mountain of shag once you have ripped it off the floor.

Now What?

Once you have removed the carpet from your home, what the heck do you do with it? It seems like a scandalously large load to dump in a landfill. Each year, around 5 billion pounds of discarded carpet ends up in landfills. While carpet represents only a tiny piece of the total amount of waste we discard, the carpet industry wants to reduce this.

Not Eco-Friendly

Traditional carpets installed in many office buildings and homes are often frowned upon by the eco-conscious. That's because most of the soft stuff we walk on is woven from petroleum-based synthetic fibers. Dumping your carpet in a landfill should be your last resort.

CARE

Consumers can't recycle carpet as easily as bottles, cans and newspapers. But there is a solution called The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) to accommodate carpet recycling. There are carpet recovery centers located around the United States that can pick up and haul away old carpet to be recycled. Unfortunately many states, especially in the Midwest, have no such facilities.

Donate

If you can’t find a carpet recovery center near you, and if your carpet is in usable shape, think about donating it. Nonprofit groups specializing in housing, such as Habitat for Humanity, may accept used carpet and carpet scraps.
