Get Cigarette Smoke out of Your Carpet

You've found your dream home, but the previous tenants were smokers. No need to abandon hope, because there are ways to get that smell out of your home. Follow these steps.

Air Freshener

First, you need to open all the windows and doors to let in as much fresh air as possible. Place small bowls of white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon around your home (out of reach of pets and kids) to help absorb the nasty smell. Get an air purifier and keep it in the rooms used the most. It will take several hours to work, but you should let it run as much as you can.

Wash All Clothes and Linens

Take all your clothes and linens to a laundromat or wash them at a friend or family member's home. Do not bring them back into the home until you have finished deodorizing. Steam clean your carpet twice. If the smell lingers, hire a professional or consider replacing the carpet.

Walls and Ceilings

Cigarette smoke rises, so ceilings are the biggest hoarder of the odor. Cleaning the walls is not enough. Use products with ammonia and glycol to neutralize the smell of smoke. Test a small, hidden section of wall to make sure the mixture will not damage your paint. Clean one room at a time. If a couple of days after cleaning, you cannot smell cigarette smoke, then great. If it lingers, you may need to repaint with a deodorizing primer and sealant.

Scrub Everything

Use a mixture of water and bleach to clean the floors, ceilings, window screens, and all fixtures. You need to get everything, including the inside of closets, cabinets, cupboards, and drawers. Also clean the outside of windows and your deck or patio as these can trap the odor as well. Use white vinegar to wipe down all the wood, plastic, or metal furniture. Sprinkle baking soda on any upholstered furniture and vacuum it up in a day or two.
